European markets extend new year rally; World Economic Forum kicks off in Davos
The pan-European Stoxx 600 closed up 0.5% provisionally, with retail and financial services both up 1.3%, and media stocks up 1.2%. It takes the index’s gains for the year to 6%, with sentiment around Europe in part buoyed by a fall in wholesale energy prices and the reopening of China.
The World Economic Forum in Switzerland is a key focus for European markets this week. Heads of state and business leaders mingle with academics and innovators in Davos. The key themes for delegates to debate and discuss are the war in Ukraine, economic instability and uncertainty and climate change, among other things.
German meal kit delivery company Hellofresh dropped 6% after Exane BNP Paribas downgraded the stock to “neutral” from “outperform.”
